Twenty-year old Zach was born with a rare genetic disorder. He and his mother share their story of perseverance, coping, and resilience. During this Live In Person Event they will take you on Zach’s musical journey to inclusion, self-forgiveness and inspiration.  

Zach’s mom, Natalie, will also tell her own story as a parent raising a differently-abled child with younger siblings who are non-disabled, including her coping mechanisms, resources, and the importance of self-care.

Presented by Kat Verdi & Guests

Kat is a Senior Living Healthcare Transitioning Advocate and Certified Alzheimer's & Dementia Disease Care Trainer, advocating for Caregivers and Aging Adults.

Approaching a decade of experience in geriatric healthcare, she has been assisting families in “healthcare transition” including those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. Kat works directly with families and teaches them how to modify their communications with their loved ones and live through the journey of dementia in the most positive way possible. Kat shares her professional tenure which covers every aspect of senior healthcare and how dramatically the landscape of Aging in America has changed. She guides and creates a “CAP” (Comprehensive Action Plan) while advocating for families through the many facets and decisions families face with their loved ones.

Tina is an attorney and advocate.  Her legal work focuses on estate planningand administration, guardianshipand decision making, disability discriminationand special needs planning for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Intro: Planning for your Child with Disabilities

This presentation covers special needs planning, including the importance of estate planning, the use of special needs trusts, options for selecting trustees, ways to fund a special needs trust, knowing when a guardianship may be appropriate, alternatives to guardianship, and an overview of government benefits like social security, Medicaid, other entitlements. The goal of this presentation is to educate families who have a child, grandchild, or even a sibling with a disability.

Estate Planning: Special Needs Trust and NJ Able Accounts

This presentation educates parents, grandparents, and other family members on the importance of an estate plan, what happens without an estate plan, and how they could jeopardize their family member’s benefits if they die without an estate plan or one that’s not properly prepared. This presentation covers the fundamentals of Wills, Special Needs Trusts, Durable Powers of Attorney, Medical Directives, NJ Able Accounts, the transfer of non-probate assets, such as life insurance policies and retirement accounts, and creating a plan to care for their family member after they are gone.

Succesful Transition to Adulthood

This presentation provides a more in-depth understanding of when a guardianship is needed, the difference between plenary guardianship and limited guardianship, and guardianship of the person and guardianship of the estate, obtaining physician certifications, the role of court appointed counsel, and options for supported decision making when a guardianship is not appropriate. This presentation will also discuss applying for entitlements like supplemental security income, Medicaid, educational entitlement in the school system, and services through the New Jersey of Division of Developmental Disabilities.
